Gum Diseases

Gum diseases refer to a range of conditions that cause inflammation and infection in the gums. When bacterial build-up called plaque accumulates around teeth and gums, the gums become inflamed, leading to gum diseases. Gum diseases present themselves with symptoms such as gum bleeding, redness, swelling, and sensitivity. If left undiagnosed and untreated, gum diseases can progress and cause tooth loss or severe damage to gum tissues. The most common causes of gum diseases are inadequate tooth brushing and flossing, smoking, stress, hormonal changes, excessive alcohol consumption, and other health conditions. Prevention and treatment of gum diseases involve regular brushing and flossing, regular dental check-ups, and necessary gum treatments when needed.

What are Gum Diseases?

Gum diseases refer to various conditions that cause inflammation and infections in the gums. Here are the most common types of gum diseases:

    • Gingivitis: The most common gum disease where the gums become inflamed. Plaque buildup on the teeth can cause sensitivity, redness, and bleeding of the gums.
    • Periodontitis: If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which damages the bone underneath the teeth and can cause teeth to become loose or lost.
    • Aggressive periodontitis: A fast-progressing type of periodontitis typically seen in younger individuals that can result in the rapid loss of teeth.
    • Chronic periodontitis:The most common type of periodontitis that occurs when the gums pull away from the teeth and towards the root.
    • Necrotizing periodontal diseases: A severe inflammation of the gums that can result in the death of gum tissues.
    • Periodontal abscess: An infection that occurs as a result of bacterial infections in the gums.

Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are important for preventing gum diseases. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the gum disease and is determined by a dentist.
